(Reviewed by Snake-666) - A poor sequel to a
below-average original. During a botched robbery at an art gallery
the Djinn (Andrew Divoff) is awoken by Morgana (Holly Fields). The Djinn
takes credit for the robbery and is sent to prison where he offers inmates
wishes in exchange for their souls. Only after collecting 1,001 souls then
granting three wishes to the one who awoke him can he, and his hordes,
inherit the earth.
I was not too fond of the original movie but this sequel certainly makes
‘Wishmaster' (1997) shine out. Ignoring much of what was established about
the Djinn in the original and adding it's own set of rules, ‘Wishmaster 2:
Evil Never Dies' is more of an exercise in sustained boredom than a horror
movie. The storyline didn't flow well enough leaving many scenes lifeless
and exceedingly dull. Not a lot can be said for the acting either with Paul
Johansson putting in an exceptionally wooden performance and Andrew Divoff
stealing the show despite being in a monotonous role.
All that being said, there were some menacing `dream flashes' featured
albeit taken directly from the original movie and Jack Sholder (who
previously directed ‘A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge)
competently directs this movie but unfortunately offers nothing that has not
been seen before. It really is a shame that his writing ability was not of
equal calibre. ‘Wishmaster 2' also featured a few good make-up effects and
some gory moments but these were outweighed by many bad and misplaced CGI
effects. Many viewers will probably appreciate this film for the
unintentional comedy moments rather than a horror film.
I'm not really going to recommend this movie. ‘Wishmaster 2' is certainly
not one to have any special interest in; it's just more of a time-passer.
Fans of the original may enjoy this more than I did but I think most horror
fans will be disappointed. My rating for ‘Wishmaster 2: Evil Never Dies'
– 4/10. |
