(Reviewed by Snake-666) - Yet another dull teen slasher.
Thirteen years after their sixth grade high school Valentines Day dance
a group of young women responsible for the humiliation of a fellow student
start to receive threatening and sickening Valentine's Day cards and gifts.
Following the murder of an old school friend it seems that the women are
being stalked by someone wanting revenge.
Here we have yet another `stylish' teen slasher made to appeal to the
MTV-generation of horror fans. ‘Valentine' suffers from slow pacing, a
contrived plot and a very unsatisfying ending. On the plus side the acting
was generally good for this type of film and there were a couple of
interesting scenes. An early scene involving Katherine Hiegl (Bride of
Chucky) being the most tense, interesting and memorable though unfortunately
rather short. Other than that the movie often lagged in places which made it
hard to sustain interest. This movie also suffers from predictability and
underdevelopment. Interestingly the main characters (Denise Richards as
Paige, Marley Shelton as Kate, Jessica Capshaw as Dorothy and Jessica
Cauffiel as Lily) are possibly the most developed characters in the horror
films of recent times, though that still doesn't say much. The problem was
with the other characters, many of them had very minor roles that made their
participation in the movie almost of no importance, and yet they should have
been. One character was obviously introduced to try and throw the viewer off
the scent of the killer but because his role was so miniscule it just seemed
tacked on.
‘Valentine' tries to be in some ways a crime thriller. We know who the
killer is but after thirteen years we do not know what he looks like and it
is also possible that Jeremy (the killer) has now assumed another name but
with so many pointless characters in the movie the plot twists become
obvious and as the viewer waits for them the movie becomes more tedious.
This isn't a total sham of a movie unlike many of the other post-Scream teen
slasher movies but it fails to add anything new to a seemingly creatively
dead sub-genre. Relying on quick `jump' scares and attempts at suspense
which ultimately failed, ‘Valentine' is somewhat of a dreary ‘Scream'
clone and I personally wouldn't recommend it in a hurry. Don't go out of
your way to hunt this down but I suppose if it's on TV one night this movie
is okay to pass the time with. My rating for ‘Valentine' – 4.5/10 |
