(Reviewed by KingEched) - Okay let me just paint this
picture for you. I go grab The Last Horror Film from work and I slap it on.
I'm sitting there and the film is pretty much looking like a badly done Scream
clone, when suddenly the screen goes staticy. When the screen clears up
there is a man standing in front of the camera's view. He then
explains that he rented this film before I did and taped over the thing with
his own movie. He then goes on to say that his name is Max Power (wink
to The Simpsons, at least that's what I took it as) and he has killed more
then 50 people! So the film is just his day to day life as he goes
around killing people and throughout the film the line of reality and
fiction becomes more and more blurred. Is this really just a film, or did
this guy tape over the thing with people actually being killed for real?
Right of the bat I was giving the film high marks for such a smart plot
idea. It's not every film that turns the viewer into one of the main
characters. Throughout the film Max talks to you and you
can't help but talk back. At one point of the film Max even asks you
why you are watching the film if you don't like what he is doing. My answer,
"I'm still watching because I just can't get enough of you man."
That's right, I was cheering Max on! Why would I do such a thing you ask.
I'll tell you why. The film does a fantastic job of making Max into a guy
that you just can't help but love. It gives him a sense of humor that will
make you laugh your head off. There are so many good bits in this film I had
a hard time counting them all. Some of the better ones were his burning of
the film that he taped over and his robbing line.
Max: And if you take the guys money the cops will think the motive was
robbery.
That line just cracked me up.
The other thing it does to make Max a "nice guy" is having it show
you not much of the murders. This film despite the title and the plot
is actually shockingly light in blood and guts. The film will A: have Max
strangle the person or B: have the camera pull away so you can't see the
gory death. Like there was just a bit more then three drops of blood in the
whole film, but some people still might find the strangulations disturbing.
Lastly, and this is one of the great high point of the film, it makes Max
into a good guy by showing you that he doesn't really like what he is doing.
Throughout the film Max tries to prove to you that his way of life is best.
He's doing what he wants to do with his life while you are just doing as
expected. You in the end will do nothing with your life and end up in a dead
end job with none of your dreams coming true, but is Max's way of life
really the best way? As Max comes to find out if you always do what you want
to do you are going to step on some toes and you are going to hurt those
around you. Max regrets what he has done and he wants you the viewer to
forgive him. That is the real reason for why he has made this film, even
though he doesn't want to admit it.
So this film has a grad A plot, grade A ant-hero, it's done shockingly well
(by the end you just might start thinking that the film really is real), a
slick sense of humor that will make you laugh pretty hard, and a fantastic
ending. The ending is amazing! I'm not lying when I say the thing blew me
away.
So I give this film a 10 out of 10 and say this is the best horror film of
2005! I say get it on DVD and after you're done seeing it, watch the making
of to put your fears at rest. |
