(Reviewed by Slaughterhouserock) - I really liked this film
because it had a strong 80's feel to it that you don't get with films these
days. What really surprised me was that it was made in 2000 while I
was thinking it had to be from the 80's. So fans of 80's cheese
rejoice, here's a film that'll bring back those wonderful years in a way
that only a cornball horror film can.
Within thirty seconds, there's already a shower scene for the required
gratuitous nudity of films like this. The lady soon dies,
being killed by some demon-looking thing. After killing her it shows
the demon(or whatever it is) at the cemetery where a single dead person
rises from the grave. This is the last we see of the demon. I
dunno why, but they just nixed him from the rest of the film.
From here we follow a guy who's car broke down to a house with a single
occupant...Gerome. Gerome is an uber-nerd who has a bad memory.
He lets the stranger in(who introduces himself as Van Roth..."Van as in
Van Halen and Roth as in David Lee", nice) to use the phone.
While waiting on his ride, Roth tells Gerome a few stories about the
"night thirst". Here's where it starts to remind me of
Creepshow. Instead of a kid reading a comic, we get a guy telling some
kid about monsters and stuff. Now throughout the film they use
captions much like a comic book as well as scenes with another shot in the
corner(similar to The Hulk, but nowhere near as much). This also adds
to the Creepshow-esque feel.
The first story is about a woman who recieves a letter telling her she
will get $25,000 if she goes to this house and does something. I admit
that wasn't paying much attention at this point because I was busy making
something to eat, either way, it wasn't important info. She goes to
find noone there and that's when the odd stuff happens. I won't go
into details, but there's some pig-faced...thing...she gets pregnant...and,
yeah, bad stuff. Next story...
This one takes place in a hospital. A dead guy comes to life and
starts chasing a med-student through the halls. He's a typical
slow-moving zombie, but somehow, he has Jason's teleportation abilities.
Everywhere the guy turns, there's the zombie. This story is
particularly funny because of the stuff the zombie does(i.e. making copies
of his ass on the photocopier, pissing on the guy in the bathroom, etc.).
And the end had me laughing my ass off. Good stuff.
The third story is about a guy going into the woods to take pictures for an
art class. Within the woods(:P) he finds evil creatures performing
some sort of ritual...or so he says. All I saw was a monster in a
hooded robe holding some bulbous squid-thing which he ends up throwing at
the guy. One of the monsters in the woods looked alot like a monster
from the old-ass film The Willies. I wouldn't doubt if it was the
exact same puppet. This one's good for those who like to see guys in
rubber suits that are supposed to be scary.
Story the fourth is a holiday story. I'll call it "Christmas in
July". Two days after the 4th of July, a little girl is playing
in her back yard when she notices a guy in a Santa suit wielding an axe.
She runs to tell her dad, but when they return, Santa's gone. This
happens alot over the next ten minutes until finally, Santa kills the dad.
The funny thing is, this story makes alot of sense. It's the only one
that could really happen and the explanation given seemed fitting.
Now's when it gets dumb. After telling the stories, Roth tells Gerome
that he has the "night thirst" and that he is a vampire.
Then Gerome says that he too, has the "night thirst" and hisses at
Roth. A fight ensues that is off-screen so I'm not exactly sure what
happened. And the end shows the zombie from the beginning killing some
guy. This left me completely confused as to what the fuck was going
on, but at least the rest of the film was fun.
So, bad acting, cheesy stories, a confusing ending, and a zombie who likes
to have fun. What else could you ask for? Like I said in the
beginning, if you like 80's cheese, you'll enjoy this like a walk down
memory lane. I gave it a 3 outta 5. It would've scored higher if
the ending made more sense. |
