Tara Reid Takes On Some Pesky Snakes in ‘Vipers’

There is no esssssscape when VIPERS slithers to DVD September 23 from Genius Products and RHI Entertainment. When there is a break in at a medical research laboratory’s classified seaside location, a mass of genetically enhanced vipers are freed. The sinister snakes reproduce at an alarming rate, eating everything in their path. Outnumbered, a group of locals are trapped in a hotel on an isolated island and have only one chance to stay alive: make it to the shore — and fast. The fang-filled tenth installment in the “Maneater” series stars Tara Reid (American Pie, My Boss’s Daughter), Corbin Bernsen (“LA Law,” “Psych”) and Jessica Steen (Armageddon). Perkins 14 coming soon?

Arrowinthehead.com has recently reported that ‘Perkins 14′ is being readied for release, as part of After Dark’s Horrorfest. Word is that the film is expected sometime in January 2009. Odd. given that the Horrorfest has typically been set during the fall. We’ll have to wait and see.

Bigscreen Goosebumps

Columbia Pictures is looking to adapt the popular children’s horror series ‘Goosebumps’ for a big screen film. The Hollywood Reporter got news that the writing duo Larry Karaszewski and Scott Alexander (who wrote the scripts for ‘Ed Wood’ and ‘The People vs. Larry Flynt’) are in negotiations to pen the script for this project. I love buying films. I really do. My collection is an ever-growing melange of Horror movies, Asian classical cinema, Danish modern films, and a dose of films every man must own, such as 300. I even boast a fine collection of Nazi films, from Nazi themed films like Der Untergang, Schindler’s List, Inside the Third Reich and Kolberg to documentaries like Triumph of the Will and Hitler Speaks. I love buying films. But lately I’ve realized that there is a trend, as strong in horror as in any other, of making me waste my money. Repeatedly having to buy films and newer versions of films and special editions of films, it’s like there is no end to the amount of stuff they think they can make me purchase. It’s taking the piss, quite frankly, and we should all stand up and say something about it. (more…)

Clocks, Rollin’s last?

Fangoria has gotten news on the latest, and probably last, cinematic effort by director Jean Rollin (’The Living Dead Girl’), titled ‘The Night of the Clocks’. Rollin had this to say, of the upcoming film.

It is about a young girl who becomes involved in a mystery and learns about a passage to another world. It is a very subtle horror story. It is also likely to be my last film.

The Horseman is coming

Fangoria has recently gotten scoop on an Aussie revenge thriller titled ‘The Horseman’. The upcoming movie was written and directed by Steven Kastrissios and stars Peter Marshall, Caroline Marohasy, and Brad McMurray. Maggie Grace to play Alice

Variety has recently reported that Maggie Grace (’Lost’) has signed on for the lead role in ‘Malice in Wonderland’. She joins a cast that includes Nathaniel Parker, Danny Dyer, Katia Winter, and Bronagh Gallagher. The upcoming film will be directed by Simon Fellows (’Until Death’, ‘Second in Command’) from a script by Jayson Rothwell. (more…)

Antichrist lands former Jesus

Willem Dafoe, he of The Last Temptation of the Christ fame, has signed on to feature in Lars von Trier’s supernatural thriller “Antichrist.” He will be joined by french star Charlotte Gainsbourg, who has starred in a variety of films including 21 Grams and The Science of Sleep. Together the two will form the leads in this supernatural thriller.

The story itself revolves around a couple who retreat to an isolated island to mourn the loss of their son. Clearly judging by the title and the description of a thriller turned horror movie, the odds of them finding solace and enjoying a weekend in the sun seem pretty slim. More news on the story will doubtless follow, but we do know that the script is penned by Anders Thomas Jensen. Now this should bring hope to many sources, as he has scripted some absolute gems (and directed them as well) including writing 2 of the best dark comedies Denmark has released, in “Adams æbler” and “De Grønne Slagtere.” Many of you will not be as interested in Danish Cinema as I am, but both these stories revolve around, respectively, a priest who takes in a neo-nazi and tries to encourage him to bake an apple pie (its a reform thing) and a couple butchers who discover that the key to success is to sell human flesh in lieu of chicken. They are both comically perfect, and do have a morbid darkness to them. If he can bring half of that creativity to this script, we’re in for a treat.

Some will also wonder if we should expect much from a director who is more famous for films like Manderlay, Dancer in the Dark, and Dogville. Not everyone will recall that he not only made quite the creatively terrifying film “Epidemic” which he starred in himself, but also created a TV-series that is still considered by many as a peak of Scanian TV in “Riget” which spanned 2 parts. He’s certainly showed that he is not only a capable and creative director, but one with a good sense for chilling horror and discomfort. Combined with a good script by Jensen and Denmark may well show us why they can make a horror film as good as any.
