Hello everybody, I am Jonathan Moody. I am a filmmaker/Online radio show host. You may know me as the host of the Independent Corner Radio Show on Blog Talk Radio… quick plug
A while ago I posted my views public-ly on remakes on my facebook page. Especially my feelings toward A Nightmare On Elm Street being remade, a movie that is near and dear to my dark heart. My views were not well received by certain people in the quote un quote “industry” who have websites that promote said film. Here’s how I see it; if you are a true horror fan you will not like someone remaking a movie you grew up watching and then destroying it.
Let’s take Elm Street as an example of this… mind you this is all based off of the trailer. First off, Freddy is made to be a whiny innocent little bitch… wait, can I say bitch in an expose? I can understand changing the tone and trying to make it darker. But for the love of God don’t make his character believe he’s innocent just to make the audience sympathize with him. Cause truth be told you’re never gonna care about him. He’s a monster.
Let’s take a break for a brief second and talk about the history and evolution of our favorite murderers and what made them so great. Let’s start off with Michael Myers. In John Carpenters Halloween he was a badass. He murdered his sister in cold blood and then comes back to his town to kill his baby sister. He had no remorse. He was a boogeyman. In Rob Zombie’s Halloween — sorry Rob, but you RUINED what made him great! You tried to make him more sympathetic. Drop the Sym and what do you get… It was horrible! And we have almost an hour of back story before we are even introduced to the real main character, Scout Taylor Compton’s Laurie. Ugghh. Scout, Danielle, and Kristina were the best actors in the whole film. Though I might add Malcolm did a great job. Thank God I didn’t shut it off after the first 40 fucking boring minutes.
This brief second is turning out longer than I thought. Next up lets talk about Friday the 13th. In the first one it was Jason’s mom running around killing everyone. Which could have been kick ass for the sequels if they brought her back from the dead with no head. Like a headless pissed off “Soccer Mom”. Well the remake was a bit smart cause everybody remembers Jason and not Mrs. Voorhees. But the rest of the movie just doesn’t seem right. It seems like it was Friday the the 13th fan fiction adapted to the big screen. But they did one thing I loved which was not give me a back story where I was supposed to feel bad for this guy. In fact you rooted for the good guys to make it out of there unlike the other films where you seem to want the killer to win because the main characters are so annoying.
One last remake I’d like to talk about has yet to happen… yes Child’s Play! Now I heard this is getting another reboot with the same director that made the first one. Is he gonna also recycle the original script too? This is just so sad. I loved Child’s Play 1 and 2… after 3 it just got redundant to me. I mean I’ve always thought how easy would it be to just punt the little fucker. And I loved The Simpsons jab at it where you just push a switch and he becomes “good”, that was classic. But to make him dark and disturbing again and abandon the wise cracking, is just boring to me. I mean how serious can you take a 2 foot doll, anyway?
But to get back to Elm Street. I found a couple other things annoying from the trailer. For instance, a couple of the shots seemed like rip offs of the original film. Okay, I understand paying homage to the film you are remaking but to flat out steal shots seems pretty low. This goes back to the Psycho shot for shot remake and how retarded I felt that movie was. As much as I love you Vince Vaughn, please stick to comedy! Elm Street just looks bad. Now I may be wrong and everybody may be telling me how incredibly awesome this movie is after it’s in the theatre. But I’m not going to spend my hard earned 10 dollars or whatever it costs to watch a movie these days on something that looks so bad.
The thing is a Platinum Dunes gig. This is what they do. Once one remake does well, the rest follow. But if we all don’t support it… then all of a sudden they go away and the horror fans are happy. However, I can see why people like these so called critics don’t like my opinions. Plain and simple, it’s because Elm Street is making them money. Platinum Dunes is paying them to put up ads on their sites andif they say something against the movie it reflects poorly on the site. It makes total sense. Does that mean that these critics actually believe this movie will be good? Who knows?! You won’t be able to get them to tell you the real truth as long as they need to support it. This could be considered propaganda.
I don’t think this article will change anybody’s mind about seeing the film. Regardless of what anybody says, if you’re a true horror fan you are not gonna see it. So listen to your inner self, do you wanna see it? Do you not want to see it? The choice is up to you. I just put out my opinions and I hope I changed a few minds! This is Jonathan Moody saying: Stay safe but bloody!
