It is always interesting to see how re-releases of old classics try to modernize the film with it’s cover art. Sometimes now famous stars get top billing despite being an unknown glorified extra. A lot of older films exchange the 80’s paintings for a more up to date poster with the characters looking onward. Then there’s the case in point, a film marketing itself as something it’s not to join in on a current fad. Here’s the picture of the new Near Dark Blu-Ray courtesy of HorrorYearBook.
The Time Out Film Guide didn’t give a very inspiring blurb, did it? What’s odd is that many horror fans consider Near Dark to be the “anti-twilight” and the cover looks a lot like Twilight and the Twilight knock-off books and “wannabe” movies. Near Dark fans likely will still find this dvd and laugh but some Twilight fans blind buying it will be in for a treat.

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a TrackbackI’m not sure if I completely agree with this, but I see where you’re going. Perhaps some Twilight fans are going to see this in just in hopes of a good vamp romance, but even the ages are a bit different and thus appeal to a different age group. And I did like the romance element in the movie so if they get reminded of a solid vampire film that happens to have that element I don’t think it’s simply cashing in. Attraction and allure of vampires is a pretty universal vampire concept. Also, the reason for them doing it now could very well be Adrian Pasdar’s success and popularity from Heroes. I see what you’re going for though. The pose is similar to that of the twilight poster and it is a vampire romance with a relatively good and at least at first not evil natured vampire. Yeah that quote is a bit non-descriptive. I wrote a review on it this summer when I watched it and I think I mine at least had a bit more description in it by golly!
Ahh! It burns us, it burns us. Welp, can’t buy the Blu-Ray of this fine film because they completely gayed up the cover. Lose the real fans of this to get a couple Twilighters. Way to go, Lions Gate, way to go.
And it’s almost unrecognizable. At first I don’t even see Pasdar, I see Edward fucking Cullen.
