Sam Raimi’s “Drag Me to Hell” originally was reported to have placed third over the weekend at the box office. However, the film’s gross was adjusted from 16.6 million to 15.8 million on 2,900 screens. This adjustment put it just under Terminator: Salvation which pulled in 16.4 million in it’s second week.
This is probably looked at as a small disappointment for Universal as it pulls it farther away from the 21 million “The Strangers” earned on the same weekend last year. The good news is that “Drag Me to Hell” received good reviews last night on HorrorMovieFans.com Radio Network’s Sunday Night Horror and at HorrorYearBook. In fact, the film scored a 94% Fresh at RottenTomatoes despite being a minor box office dud. The horror base not showing up to support this film has to be a bitter pill to swallow for Raimi but is most likely a result of the Evil Dead Trilogy being a distant memory.
In second place was last week’s winner “Night of the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian” which pulled in 25.5 million in it’s second week. Leading the way was “Up” from “Box Office Kings” Pixar Animation Studios. The Studio’s 10th hit in a row was a family film centering on a 78-year-old man and it banked 68.2 million.
J.J. Abrams’ “Star Trek” passed the 200 million mark and became the year’s highest grossing film. “Angels and Demons” slid past the 100 million mark. “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” still leads weekend openings for the year at 85 million. Click here for a complete list of the Box Office Results.
Edit: The film had the third highest theater count over the weekend. I was probably a bit hasty to compare it to “The Strangers” — the film did have a good weekend. If it has a solid follow up weekend it could be a really good success.

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a TrackbackWow, Drag Me To Hell had only 2,508 screens showing it….it’s weekend take doesn’t look so bad considering most average openers are well above 3,000 screens (and Terminator Salvation is over 4,000 from the weekend, so I’d say Drag Me To Hell likely averaged well per theatre).
[…] The film was fourth over the weekend with a good 15.8 million over the weekend. I was a bit quick to compare it to “The Strangers” great performance last year and edited my earlier article on it’s box office performance. […]
