“Baby Blues” directed by Lars E. Jacobson and Amardeep Kaleka is an intense tale of a mother suffering a psychotic episode caused by postpartum depression. The film starts off innocently enough with a beautiful family on a farm living a seemingly normal life. As the movie progresses we see that the mother is unstable, alcoholic, and obviously about to lose it. She begins having halucinations, hearing voices, and slowly becoming more violent. The oldest son Jimmy(Ridge Canipe) begins to notice a change in his mom when he sees her on her knees crying after having a halucination. Jimmy tells his dad who ignores him as he is leaving for another truck driving job and the boy is left to defend his siblings alone. Jimmy has a younger brother, younger sister and a newborn baby brother. The mother, played brilliantly by Colleen Porch, snaps later that evening. She is upset because her husband is never there, she suspects him of cheating, and the kids are screaming which sends her into a murderous rampage that is very disturbing. She smashes a bowl of beans on the kitchen floor then grabs the newborn to give him his second bath of the day. This is where the very uncomfortable feeling starts to set in as Jimmy goes upstairs to check on his mother and hears the water running and sees the baby on the bed. He leans in to check on the infant only to realize that it is cold and has been killed by his mother. He walks into the bathroom to see his mom on the floor in a panic, covered in blood, at which point little Cathy walks in and has spilled her drink on her dress. The fun begins here as mom calls her a “filthy little bitch” and is about to attack her when Jimmy steps in only to be slapped and knocked unconscious by the sink. As Jimmy wakes up he sees his mother drowning Cathy in the bathtub and smashes a mirror over her head. The kids run outside and the intensity begins to grow. I won’t spoil it for you by giving away any more details but I was literally on the edge of my seat for the rest of the film. Colleen Porch is terrifying and I hope to see her alot in future horror films. The whole atmosphere was a chilling experience and filmed in a way that gave me that good old 80’s horror vibe. This movie was a wonderful surprise and I highly recommend it to any horror fan.
