“Domain of the Dammed” is about a roadside freak show attraction that lies on a Texas highway where the forest has a dark secret. A drifter, who is plagued by nightmares, takes job at that freak show. Soon, his nightmares start to become a reality, when he is trapped in the attraction. He is joined by group of deejays and a troubled young woman who lost her nephew inside the attraction. Soon they will come face to face with some of the undead freak show attractions, like Squidboy, Voodoo Queen, Jojo the Wolfboy, and Vampirita. By the end of the night, everyone will either be dead or live to see the face of Death itself.
A year ago, I really thought there wasn’t a local independent horror scene, as I always assumed that Hollywood and Vancouver was the horror scene. Well, I was totally wrong, as there’s a horror scene outside Hollywood that starting to get a little notice by horror fans, as Texas seems to be the capital of the indie horror scene. In over the last nine months or so, I’ve had to the privilege to review horror films, such as “Wicked Lake”, “Red Victoria”, and “Bloodwine” for filmarcade.net. One of the things that I’ve learned is that there are some serious talented horror filmmakers from the area. The same can be said for Stacy Davidson and his latest film “Domain of the Dammed”.
“Domain of the Dammed” is one action packed and horrifying gorefest. Writer/ Editor/ Director, Stacy Davidson’s direction was intense. This is what fun horror films are supposed to be. One of the reasons why this film was so fun was the style of directing that Davidson uses for this film. I liked how, he makes the film’s shots look like it was shot in a frantic place. It helps build tension, for the action that goes on in the film. He also does a great job in creating the dark and creepy atmosphere inside the haunted house. Davidson achieves that by having his monsters look shocking and setting up the frightening scenes. It makes the action, fun and intense to watch. The film also boasts some good effects, as it makes the look of the film, more demonic.
The acting was also very good. Davidson handles his actors very well, as he gets them to bring some intensity to their roles, which makes this one thrill ride. He also manages to some very good performances from his two main lead, Jude Hickey and Christin Sawyer Davis. They both do a good job in making their characters have chemistry with each other. It makes the dynamic of the film very interesting; given that fact the characters don’t like each other.
Davidson’s screenplay was also very effective. His screenplay does drum up a lot of scares. He effectively does that, by building to the actually horrific moments. It keeps the action intense and horrifying at the same time. But what also made the scares effective was the fact that I cared about the characters here. The reason for this is that Davidson focuses on developing the characters throughout the film. It makes the film very effective, because it didn’t seem like your typical run of the mill, slaughterhouse film. He does that so that you are invested, in the film’s story and it’s intense action that take place.
“Domain of the Dammed” is one of the frightening and action packed horror films that you will see this year.
