TotalFilm and The Hollywood Reporter are both reporting the somewhat surprising news that Poltergeist has not only added two writers, but now is close to confirming a director for the project. Apparently due credit goes to BloodyDisgusting for discovering this story. Not only did they discover the story, they fabricated it TWO YEARS AGO! Both the links will show that the story was broken two years ago. So I guess the rest of us are very late in welcoming the news then. But I digress. Bloody Disgusting, TotalFilm, The Hollywood Reporter and a few other news organizations have now all but confirmed that Poltergeist has a director. And one which perhaps many of us would not have suspected.

After signing “Boogeyman” writers Juliet Snowden and Stiles White, a duo who have written Boogeyman, and the remake of The Birds, the project has finally added some names that many would consider big. Some perhaps consider them too big for a mere horror movie remake, no offense to the genre. Director Vadim Perelman is in the closing stages of negotiations to helm Poltergeist (2009?) as another classic is brought back to life. And unlike some of the recent announcements, which have featured directors who are very much horror directors, the announcement of Vadim Perelman comes as a bit of a surprise. The man who burst onto the stage with “The House of Sand and Fog,” for which he won the CFCA award for “Most Promising Film-Maker” is now set to make a debut in horror. And it seems like it has the potential for greatness, as long as the script can avoid looking like “Boogeyman”

Perelman is not the only director of late who is venturing into horror from a fairly ‘artistic’ career. He is preceeded by Mikael Håfström and Lars von Trier as directors with powerful resumes who now find the horror genre interesting. It is a good day for Horror when we can see interesting and big names attracted to horror movies. Let’s hope that we will see their insight pay dividends for our fine genre. If not, we can always rely on some to prognosticate what films we’ll be seeing in 2 years time.
