Pathe and Celador are bringing back The Descent.

The Descent

After the $10 million budget for The Descent netted Celador a very nice profit of $57 million, it seems like quite a good idea to try and capitalize off it. Especially since there are ways to continue the story from where it left off. Of course, it’s hard to say if a sequel will ruin some of the magic of the first one, but only time will tell. What is for sure is that the original director is busy with other projects, so instead of a Neil Marshall film, we’re going to get a Jon Harris debut. After working as editor on the original The Descent he now gets the nod to join people who debut as mainstream directors of horror movie sequels. In this category are such greats as Rick Bota, Renny Harlin, and Stanley Kubrick. Ok, one of those is a lie, one stretches the premise, and one is absolutely accurate, but I digress. The point is, the project is staying in house, with the director familiar with the original project, and original cast members returning. Shauna MacDonald and Natalie Mendoza will return to the sequel, being joined by Anna Skellern, Douglas Hodge, Krysten Cummings, Joshua Dallas and Gavan O’Herlihy. Shooting should take about 8 weeks, during which they will shoot on location in Scotland and at Ealing Studios in London.

Any small studio trying to make a good horror movie, and keeping it in house with original cast members is a good thing in my opinion. Celador and Pathe have a winning film that they could hopefully make a winning sequel to, so keep your eyes open as The Descent 2 begins its redescent into madness.
