A horror movie fan interviews Uwe Boll. Here are all his answers to lifes burning questions.
Me: I just want to let you know that this isn’t going to
be an attempt to bash you or get you pissed off, I’m
going to try to be as respectful as I can while asking
the questions that I and some others from
horrormoviefans.com want to know. I also want to
thank you from all of us at horrormoviefans.com for
agreeing to do this interview.
You seem to hold your work in high regard while the
general public seems to bash it at every opportunity.
Do you feel that you are a misunderstood artist or do
you feel that what you enjoy and what they enjoy
contrast each other?
The general public buys my movies. The bashers are a few thousand people. The buyers are 5 to 10 million people.
It’s been stated in various places that you are an
avid gamer. What are some of your favorite old school
games( Atari 2600, Arcade, Nintendo, Super Nintendo,
Sega, Sega CD or any others) and why are they your
favorites?
the first game i was addicted to was ASTEROID what i played on my ATARI
Do you feel that lack of marketing support from the
video game makers has had an impact on your films?
Absolutly. ALONE 5 was scheduled to come out parallel to the movie . And when its coming out? Now
What about the reviews that your films receive? Do you
feel that your films are judged unfairly by critics?
Absolutly. I can show you everyday in TV 10 movies they are worst as my worst movie. You know and I know that my movies are not the bottom 100 of all movies ever made. They are maybe in the bottom 100 of all big major movies ever made. But soon after IN THE NAME OF THE KING, SEED and POSTAL coming out - this will change
You’ve had some pretty big names in your films. How
did you convince the likes of Clint Howard, Ray Liotta
and Ron Perlman to be in your flicks after all of the
negative media attention you received?
They give a shit. They like my movies and the scripts. There is a real world outside of small horror forums and message boards and in that world people know what is a REAL MOVIE with a REAL MARKET and what is a real piece of shit.
Do you have any fears of becoming a ’straight to
video’ director? Do you worry that your future films
are going to automatically be bashed by critics who
have chosen to jump on the “Hate Uwe Boll” bandwagon?
I want that people see my movies - on DVD, TV or on the big screen doesnt matter. In the theater is of course always the best
It seems like each movie you make loses more and more
money, are you concerned with such a massive drop in
the amount of public interest in your movies?
BLOODRAYNE was number 1 in the theaters in Russia, Middle East and Thailand. ALONE number 5 in Italy , Spain, Russia, Germany. Both movies sold over 5 mill. DVDs.
But your right: HOUSE OF THE DEAD made more money. With POSTAL, SEED and DUNGEON I have better movies coming up and they will perform better at the Box Office
I hope you can excuse the crudeness, but many people
are wondering if you know of any on set sexual
relations, drug use, or other bad behaviors of any of
your cast members? If so, have you ever had to stop
production because of their bad behavior?
Christian Slater , TaraReid , Michael Madsen are great party people but they all do their job. I dont smoke and I dont take drugs.
You’ve come across as very arrogant in some interviews
done by mainstream media, do you feel that they are
misleading the public as to your actual demeanor?
it depends I think I’m honest and straight forward. i dont bullshit people. everybody i do business with knows that if i give my word - its a word. for some people i’m maybe to hard and clear.
You’ve commented on your status as an ex-boxer, do you
feel that your reputation in film making may make
people forget about any success that you had as a
boxer? Would you rather be remembered as a
decent/great boxer or as a bad director?
i dont care
Do you have any plans to venture into more original
work, such as Blackwoods and Heart of America, or do
you plan on basing most of your work on video games?
i did SEED and now I do TUNNELRATS . both not based on games and written by me
Is obtaining the rights to make a film based off of a
video game easy to do?
no. but a good marketing idea
What are your reasons behind
making films based off of video games?
making money
You’ve gotten a lot of bad media since your debut in
the U.S.A. Is there anything you would like to say
about yourself to set the record straight on your
personality? Are you an ‘average joe’ or do you feel
that you are brighter and/or better than the average
person?
i dont have support from Hollywood , Agents etc. … a lot of people with GOOD PRESS are maybe not so great in the end.
i make my movies and this isit. if people dont like my movies - okay. if people likemy movies - perfect.
If you were offered a large sum of money to stay away
from a particular video game that you already bought
the rights to, would you accept it and honor the
agreement?
absolutly. pay me 20 mill. $ and I dont shoot FAR CRY
Are there any games that you wouldn’t touch
with a ten-foot pole due to their fanbase or the
budget requirements? For example, World of Warcraft or
Metal Gear?
some games i would not acuire because I know I dont get the money to make a 100 mill. $ movie
Do you have any plans to confront more of your
critics? Would you ever consider entering the boxing
ring again for a pay per view style event against
opponents(critics) of an unbiased outside source’s
choosing?
i fight against jean claude van damme on HBO PAY PER VIEW any time
You seem to have an affection for the horror genre.
Are you going to stick with it indefinitely, or would
you eventually like to make something based in a
different genre, such as a comedy or a family film?
POSTAL is a co,medy, DUNGEON a Fantasy Epic, SEED Horror , TUNNELRATS - Warmovie, Far Cry - Action, Alone Sci-Fi, BLOODRAYNE - Vampire, HOUSE - Zombie
Heart of - Drama , Blackwoods - Thriller, Sanctimony - Serial Murder Thriller, Barschel - Politdrama, First Semester and German Fried Movie - Comedies
Who did you most enjoy working with? Who would you
invite to work with you on another project based off
of your past experience together?
Jason Statham, Ron Perlman, Kristanna Loken , Matthew Lillard, Clint Howard, Michael Pare
Is there anyone you
wouldn’t have back no matter how much they wanted to be in another one of your flicks?
Tara Reid
Kristanna Loken’s prior commitments are keeping her
from returning to do a sequel to Bloodrayne, do you
have any thoughts or regrets on that?
She wanted to do thesequel but the is doing a SERIAL: this is the reason we went with Natassia Malthe
Alone in the Dark II is said to be in the works within
the next few years. Can you give us any hints as to
what we can expect from the flick (will Christian
Slater be back, more blood, gore, etc)? What are you
considering adding to the mix to take things up a
notch? What kind of twists can we expect to experience
in the sequel?
Rösch/Scheerer will write and direct based on the game ALONE 5 - horror in the Central Park
