(Reviewed by Foo) - This is basically a graphic
survival film in the same mold as "Last House on the Left" and
"I Spit on Your Grave". The thing that separates those films from
Mother's Day is the character development that make the scenes of torture
harder to watch, in the other films. Mother's Day chooses to insert
some goofy moments to tone down the intensity.
The film centers around three teenage girls who are abducted by a mother
and her two crazy sons. The mother is genuinely creepy, but the sons are a
little too stereotypical to be great characters.
This isn't an overly gory film, although it does have it's over-the-top
moments, such as an axe to the groin and a pretty nice decapitation. The
whole "do as your mother says" bit works for a while but then
becomes pointless. It's not a "great" film, it a sick film with
some good aspects to it.
The movie itself doesn't really cover any new ground. The plot works well
here, and it does have some overly cheesy moments that add some interest. This is a Troma film, but it does not really resemble any of their
later work. This is a very straight forward horror movie. This film is also
somewhat noteworthy for being filmed at the same time, on the same lake, as
the original "Friday the 13th"
I enjoyed the film, but I felt they should have ramped up either the
humor or the violence, or both. The movie was released years after
both "I Spit..." and "Last House...". The climate
in society was such that they could have really made this something special.
