Really? I haven't seen 2 and refuse to use a VCR but word around the campfire (campfire= Foo) is that 2 was pretty badass.
I loved 1 and 2. The others are just o.k.

Was it basic cable or a premium channel.
Part 2 is VERY badass. Very fun horror in the ED2 mold.

I loved part 2. The first one is good but the second one raises the stakes. I agree with the Evil Dead II comparison.

It was on a premium channel. I think it was Cinemax. Sorry, tho, I pretty much hated 2. It seemed more like a macho bullshit action flick than a horror film to me, and I don't dig action flicks.
The scene in the motel was pretty cool, tho.

Oh, I agree with that. It was a macho bullshit action flick, instead of pure horror.

The original Phantasm will always be king with me. Part II is very good, III sucked, and four was honorable but still watchable mess.

Just saw Part 2 and it was excellent. To echo the sentiments of many thus far, I think it's a toss up between 1 and 2 so far (haven't seen 3 and 4 but it doesn't look like they will be contenders anyhow). Part 2 was certainly more action heavy, so maybe that gives the edge to part 1, and I also liked the grittiness of the original to the more polished look and budget in 2. HOWEVER, part 2 has a chainsaw duel, and as we all know there are few things in life sweeter than a fucking chainsaw duel. Just having one bumps a film up a whole grade. Although of the big three this was the weakest chainsaw duel. In the end, what tips part 2 for me though was that it has Roach from Point Break in it, who is fucking awesome.

Part 2 is my favorite by quite a bit, actually. One of the most entertaining horror movies I've seen.

| I'm going for 1, by a short margin. I see why 2 is more "entertaining" but I always loved the creepy 70's atmosphere of the first, making it totally iconic to me. 2 is pretty fucking awesome, but lost that creepy edge. Maybe over time I'll like 2 more, since it's pretty fresh.

The original has it all.
But if I'm gonna pick a sequel as being the best of the bunch, I'm definitely, absolutely going with #4. It's got a cool slow-burn feel to it, incorporates outtakes from the original in a very cool way... it's very subtle, and a fitting end to the series.
In fact, I'd go so far as to say I'd recommend to newbies that they ONLY see #1 and #4.
I now regret purchasing #3 without having seen it first, it's gonna gather a hell of a lot of dust on my shelf.

I agree with everything you said. Except, I really liked III. Sue me, it entertained me.
My rank would be 4, 1, 3, and 2...Let the lynching begin.
