Welcome to HorrorMovieFans.com!  Here I will be going over some stuff that you may or may not know.  I'll start out with typical message board information and lead on into the specifics.

Q:  Alright, I've made an account, now what?

A:  First thing you'll want to do is make an intro thread in the Introductions board.  It's not necessary, but it gives you a chance to tell us what films you're interested in, who you're favorite killers are, and even any non-horror related stuff you want to expand upon.

From there you'll either want to check out the main board page here, or click on the Recent tab at the top of the boards to see the most current topics being discussed.  You can also get to the Recent page by clicking the banner at the top of the screen.

Q:  How do I make a new thread?

A:  Go to the board that covers the topic you want to discuss and click on the New Topic button.  Put in a title for the Subject line and, if you want, a brief description below it.

Q:  What can I post about?

A:  Anything you want.  We've got a board for just about everything you can think of.  If you don't see a board that fits what you want to discuss, put it in the General board.

Q:  How do I quote someone?

A:  Find the reply you wish to quote and hit the Quote button above it.  You may want to delete any extraneous text in the quote to cut down the size, but it isn't necessary.

Q:  What's that red arrow next to the thread title mean?

A:  It means you there are new posts in the thread and you can click it to take you to the newest post made since you last visited that thread.

Q:  How do I send someone a Private Message(PM)?

A:  Click the person's screen name and a little box should pop up.  From there you get several options including sending them a PM.

Q:  I can't seem to register.  What gives?

A:  If you have any problems registering an account here, email Foo@horrormoviefans.com and he'll handle it.

Q:  Where did the board go?

A:  My guess would be it's Sunday.  Our server does it's routine maintenance on Sundays and sometimes it screws up the boards making them inaccessable.  Not to worry, as we have a spare board for when this one is on the fritz so people can keep tabs on what's going on.

Q:  Can I curse here?

A:  Yes, yes you can.  We're almost solely an 18+ message board, but we do have some underage members.  That being said, feel free to spout out prophanities as you see fit, just don't do it for the hell of it.

Q:  Do I have to go through all those old threads to see if something's already been discussed or can I just make a new thread?

A:  Unlike most other boards, we don't care if there's an old thread about a certain film/actor/etc.  If you want to make a new thread about something, go right ahead.

Q:  Can I start a tournament/game/etc.?

A:  Sure thing.  If you have an idea for something, feel free to post it on the boards.  If you don't know how to go about making it, just ask and someone will help you figure it out.

Q:  Can I write a review?

A:  By all means.  If you want to review something you can either post it in our Reviews board or let one of the Newsblog editors know about it and they'll get it posted there.

Q:  What are the rules here?

A:
Basically, don't be a dick to the other members and don't spam.  Otherwise, we're pretty laid back when it comes to rules.

Q:  I'm afraid I come off as an asshole because sarcasm doesn't translate well over the internet.  What can I do?

A:  Smileys are the most common way of showing your intent, but you could just as easily say you're joking or serious.  We're all pretty easy going here so you'll see plenty of smileys in most posts.

Q:  How do I upload an avatar?

A:  Click on the My Account button at the top right of the screen, then go to Avatars.  From there click Browse and choose the pic you want to use from your computer.  Once you've chosen a pic, click Upload and you're done.

Q:  How do I upload a signature pic?

A:  First thing you'll want to do is get an account at a picture hosting site(the most common are photobucket and tinypic).  Upload whatever pics you want to your account there and they'll now be available to post here.  Go to My Account then Profile.  All the way at the bottom you'll find the Signature box.  Put in the image code from your picture hosting site and hit save.

Q:  What are the size limitations for Avatars and Sig Pics?

A:  Avatars should be no larger than 200x200, siggy pics should be no taller than 400 and no wider than 600. (pixels)

Q:  I uploaded a new avatar, but I still see my old one.  What am I doing wrong?

A:  Nothing, it's most likely that the old pic is stored in your cookies and may take awhile to show the new one.  To clear this up, delete your cookies and restart your browser or just wait it out.

Q:  How do I insert a picture into my post?

A:  There's two ways to do this.  If you have the pic on a hosting site as noted above, then click on the Insert Image button in the reply toolbar.  It's the one that looks like a page with three colored circles on it.  Put in the link code and hit ok.  If you have the image on your computer, click the Browse button below the reply window.  Find the pic and hit ok.

Q:  What's the Random Chat board for?

A:  The Random Chat board is where we make daily threads for just shooting the shit.  We talk about anything and everything there like you would hold a conversation with a friend.  Feel free to jump in anytime to get more acquainted with the other posters.

Q:  What happens if I post something in the wrong board/thread?

A:  Someone might bust your balls about it, but it's all in good fun.  We're not real strict about that stuff, so we'll probably move it to the appropriate section and move on.

Q:  Can I post off-topic stuff?

A:  Sure.  In fact, you'll soon find out that very few threads actually stay on topic here.  Depending on your outlook, this could be a good thing or a bad thing.  We just like to let conversations take their natural course.  If you don't like people posting off-topic remarks in your threads, please specify this in your original post.  I can't guarantee people will stay on topic, but we tend to respect other posters.

Q:  Can I link to my website?

A:  Sure, as long as you don't spam a link, it's fine with us.  It would be appreciated if you linked to us at your site in reciprocation though.

Q:  What's the Movie of the Week for?

A:  It's like a book of the week club, but with horror films.  Every week our members pick a film for everyone to watch and discuss.  If you want to join in, feel free to make a post in the current MOTW thread stickied at the top of the page.

Q:  I need help finding a movie.

A:  That's not a question, but it's a common thing around here.  Make a thread and give us as much information as you can.  We're all pretty knowledgeable when it comes to horror films, so hopefully we can help you out.

Q:  What's a Charter Member?

A:  A Charter Member is the highest honor one can get at HMF.  Those that started the board were the original Charter Members, but newer members who become an active part of the community are always welcome to join the club.

Q:  How do I become one?

A:  It is easy.  Just make a contribution to the community. The easiest way is just to post.  There are no set criteria, but if one is posting, they tend to get privately nominated around 500 posts or so.  Once nominated, their nomination is verified by two other Charter Members.  If someone is contributing via the NewsBlog, Radio Shows, or in some other way, they can also become a Charter Member.

Q:  How do I get a custom title?

A:  If you become a contributor to the boards through the Newsblog, Radio shows, or any other facet of the boards, you may be eligible for a custom title.  Ultimately, it comes down to a decision amongst the Mods/Admin.

Q:  Someone mentioned a Newsblog, where is that?

A:  Our Newsblog is located here.

Q:  I heard you guys have a radio show.  Where can I listen to it?

A:  We have a few radio shows, all of which can be listened to here.

Q:  What are the different shows and when do they air?

A:  Currently HMF Radio has 3 Shows.  They are HMF Indie Radio, Sunday Night Horror with Mike Olsson, and Havok and Seb's Horror Discussion.  They air on Sunday and Monday Nights.  Check the board for upcoming shows.

Q:  Can I call in to the shows?  If so, what's the number?

A:  Yes, you can call into the shows when they are live.  The Call-in number is 646-716-7438.  The show hosts run the switchboard, so bear with them, especially if they are conducting an interview.  Sometimes, it is best to tell them you have a question in the Live Chat.

Q:  How do I make a word into a link?

A:  First, highlight the word you want to make a link.  Next, find the hyperlink button in the reply toolbar, it's the one shaped like a globe with two brackets underneath it.  Click it, insert the link, and hit ok.

Q:  How do I embed a video?

A:  At the top of the reply screen there's a red f-shaped button(the flash button). Click that and put in the embed link{not the actual link, the one that says "Embed"). Youtube tends to give too much information with their links so you have to cut it down to the part starting with http and delete anything after the quotation at the end of the link.

Q: Where's the embed code?

A: If you're using Youtube, you can find the embed code by pressing the "Embed" button under the video. You can also right-click the video itself and find an option to "Copy Embed HTML". Other sites vary, just look for where it says "embed code".

Q:  I don't see the flash button, why is that?

A:  You're most likely using a non-standard internet browser.  By that I mean you're using something other than IE or Firefox.  Browsers known to have this issue include Opera, Safari, and Google Chrome.  This site was made with IE/Firefox users in mind since they are the most common used, unfortunately, some things aren't compatible with all browsers.  If you are using IE or Firefox and still have this issue, I am uncertain what is causing it, but here's how to embed without the flash button.

If you're using a browser that doesn't have the flash button, then you have to use the flash BB code. Using the same embed link mentioned above, just put flash=(aspect ratio given in link) in front of the link and /flash after the link. Both of those should be in the square brackets like so [flash=435,329]link[/ flash] just without the space.

Q: All that flash and embed talk was gibberish to me, can you explain it any better?

A: Click here for a nifty gif explaining one way to do it or here for a step by step walkthrough with images.

Q:  What's the deal with the style="BACKGROUND-COLOR: #000000" showing up in posts?

A:  That happens sometimes when you hit enter.  We're still not sure what causes it, but you can tell it's going to do it if you see the background of your text is black instead of the usual color.  Deleting the text and starting again tends to make it go away.

Q:  Who do I talk to if I want to contribute to the Newsblog/Radio Shows/etc.?

A:  Your best bet would be to PM Foo with what you're interested in and he'll point you in the right direction.

Q:  I have a question not covered here, what do I do?

A:  If you ever have any questions, feel free to ask any members of the boards.  You can start a new topic on it, post it in the daily chat, or PM one of the mods/admin.  We're all willing to help you figure out whatever it is you may need.

Where's my custom "Fun-killer" title?:p

By the way, this is very informative. I remember reading it when I first joined.

At this point, I'll settle for "Moderator" as my user title. Thoughts, Fooskey? All of my suggestions have been shot down and I've got nothing left, I just need to get out of this current useless usertitle. :p

"Moderator" was the only title I had back when i was on the mod team. While some of the custom titles I've seen are pretty cool I've never understood why we got so many. It's hard to keep up with who is a mod and who's not lol

Maybe we should make a list of the HMF staff members, what their jobs are and so on....any thoughts?

Now we're essentially all just moderators.

Maybe everyone over 5k posts could get the custom title of their choosing, or something like that.

That was in response to your question as well.  I was stating that I would be happy to change your title.

Raise it to 10k, IMO. We need to separate ourselves from the riff raff. :yee

I will think of something later. Any suggestions, boys?

This sounds good, I would have chosen Lover Of Cheesy Horror, but in respect to Slaughter, I can't claim that title since it is his already.
