(Reviewed by Snake-666) - Entertaining but ridiculous
cheesy horror. For me ‘Jack Frost' is somewhat of a guilty
pleasure. I know that it's a stupid idea and I shouldn't really like it, but
I do. In fact I like ‘Jack Frost' a fair bit and watch it every now and
again on DVD. I first sought out this film after the minute notoriety it
gained for a short period of time when it was released on the same day as
‘Jack Frost' (1998) in the UK and unfortunate mix up's occurred. I know
this is a fairly tame movie but I bet it could mess with a 6 year old's
head. Anyway, I digress…
Jack Frost (Scott MacDonald) is a serial killer who is being transported to
the place where he is to be executed for his crimes. On the way the prison
van collides with a chemical transportation lorry which allows Jack to
escape from the van. After being sprayed with the chemical from the lorry
Jack melts and bonds with the snow turning him into a mutant snowman and
allowing him to have the time of his life. Realising he's near the town
where Sheriff Sam Tiler (Chris Allport) lives, the man who captured him, he
decides to pay a visit and exact the revenge which he swore he'd take.
The plot is stupid and the premise ludicrous but this film still has a sort
of camp and cheesy charm to it. Luckily the makers of this film decided not
to try and make a serious film about a killer snowman and so opted to turn
this into a comedy, and I personally think they did that rather well. The
soundtrack and direction create some particularly humorous moments and while
not being on a par with horror comedies like ‘Evil Dead II: Dead by Dawn'
it manages to create some originality and some truly funny scenes. Some
people may be offended by some of the humour in the film, like the infamous
implied rape scene that has featured on many TV shows like ‘Out THERE' and
‘Weird TV' but in context the film isn't particularly vile or offensive,
it's just different.
Don't look for award winning special effects, the snowman is quite obviously
fake, but some of the make up effects are fairly well done and deserve a
little credit. The acting is pretty poor throughout the movie but that is
pretty irrelevant as all this movie is meant to be is a fun, cheesy horror
harking back to the days of the equally ludicrous B-movies, and it succeeds
at that attempt.
Would I recommend this? If you're a fan of horror comedy cheese yes, but be
warned this movie is that little bit extra silly and is probably not to
everyone's taste. I wouldn't really recommend it to non-genre fans but I am
sure that some out there will enjoy it. My rating for ‘Jack Frost' –
