(Reviewed by Dusted) - I Know What You Did Last Summer
(1997)
Loosely based upon the popular Louis Duncan novel, "I Know What You Did
Last Summer" follows four carefree friends celebrating their last days as
High School students before moving on to the next stage of their lives.
After partying the night away, they begin speeding down a highway and
accidentally hit a man. Convinced the man is dead, they decide to
throw the body into the ocean, so that their future's will not be ruined.
After they dump the body, they make a pact to never speak of the incident
again. A year later we see Julie James (Hewitt) getting ready to leave
college, and return home for the summer. While back at home she
receives a menacing letter that says "I Know What You Did Last
Summer". Shaken by the letter she tells the others who haven't
kept in contact since the accident. They think that the letter may
just be a sick joke, until they realise that their lives are really in jeopardy.
Made during the teen slasher craze of the late 90's, "I Know"
manages to be an enjoyable film. Williamson puts a solid script
together with some good red herrings, but doesn't pay much homage to the
genre (as he did in Scream), which is disappointing. I Know What You
Did Last Summer was obviously influenced by the 80's slasher "Prom
Night", which played a big part in making the genre mainstream.
We also get to see four future stars (Hewitt, Gellar, Phillipe, and Prinze)
play their first leading roles, and they do a great job. Overall,
"I Know What You Did Last Summer" is a good film, and will be
appreciated by any horror fan. 6.5/10 stars
