Best Non Horror Movie Remake?

Post by Jason »

I don't feel like we've talked much about non horror movie remakes and how those compare to their originals. What do you think was the best remake for anything other than horror?

For me, I can't think of too many off the top of my head, but a glaringly obvious one is Cape Fear.

Michael Mann's Last of the Mohicans. Doesn't truly count as a readaption because Mann specifically remade one of the older versions of the film, and didn't even go to the book.

I've come to realize that there aren't nearly as many non horror remakes as horror remakes.

I also thought Bradley Cooper's A Star Is Born was pretty great. Much better than the 70's version, but not as good as the Judy Garland version, imo.

Also Mann's Heat, which was a remake of his own LA Takedown TV movie. Not sure if that properly counts though.

That's right, it's a remake of a French movie.

Also, The Departed.

my favorite remake of a non-horror movie is actually a television show, so probably doesn't count here... but a few movies i really like are the clooney/pitt ocean's eleven, judy garland's the wizard of oz, and peter jackson's king kong. (although i do consider the original king kong to be horror, just not the remake)

My problem with non-horror remakes is that I can't think of one where I've actually seen the original and remake. It's always one or the other, never both. Can't say a remake's better if I haven't seen the original.

Just about to say the same thing as Slaughter, I've never seen any of the originals to these highly praised remakes. I should make an effort to do that.

Well fuck, if that becomes a requirement, I'm in same boat. I didn't list Scarface because I figured most never seen the original so who gives a shit. I have seen both Cape Fears and the Night of the Hunter (the quasi source), I'd take Night of the Hunter of those though.

Double Impact is a remake of the Corsican Brothers, and I have seen the Cheech and Chong version, so I'm counting it!

I'm actually a huge fan of the Point Break remake. At first watch, I thought it was slightly above par, but I've really gotten to appreciate it with repeat views.
