What's to come for horror in the 2020s?
What's to come for horror in the 2020s?
where do you see the genre going? what do you hope to see? anything coming, or announced to come, in the first year or two that you're anticipating?

Hope: Decently budgeted practical FX werewolf movies that aren't direct-to-streaming crap.
Where do I see it going: more cgi. Goddamn stuck in the resolution it's produced in and will never age well CGI.

Hard to predict subgenre trends though. Could be anything. More animal-attack horror may come since Crawl did okay, after 47 Meters Down (and an upcoming sequel) and The Meg last year (though that leaned more on the action/comedy end), but who knows?
Re: What's to come for horror in the 2020s?
James Wan said he wanted to do more practical effects. Which could be promising.

was crawl practical effects or cgi?
Re: What's to come for horror in the 2020s?
Haven't seen it. No idea. He said he wants to do an original horror idea with "old school, practical horror effects". So he's talking about his next movie, whatever it might be.

Mostly CGI. Which is not encouraging since it did okay and was well reviewedzombie wrote:was crawl practical effects or cgi?

yeah i don't think james wan had any involvement with crawl. the question was meant more for d. and he answered.Jason wrote:Haven't seen it. No idea. i hope that james wan does cool stuff with practical effects and the supernatural type of horror that he seems to be most interested in. could be cool, if he really goes for it.

It still amuses me that the CGI quality of the gators in Crawl were more emotional and believable than The Lion King lol (according to several reviews)

Have you seen the trailer for the Creepshow TV show? That looks like it is going to have some actual practical effects...zombie wrote:yeah i don't think james wan had any involvement with crawl. the question was meant more for d. and he answered.Jason wrote:Haven't seen it. Yeah, thanks to Greg Nicotero spearheading it. More movies need to use his model!

nicotero is more on the indie side of things. and of course he came up doing practical fx, so yeah. but i think that most of the more indie, not studio-backed as much, horror filmmakers are going practical still? like the soska sisters as example.

Lots more "elevated" horror. So people who get it can think they're smart.
