Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (No Spoilers)

Post by Tiggnutz »

Quentin Tarantino is my favorite director for many reasons. Dialogue between his characters is unrivaled in my opinion. His use of comedy in even the most tense situations. The way he chooses songs for his scenes. And in every Tarantino film there will be a time where you say Holy Fuck!! Once Upon a time in Hollywood showcases all of these. Cinematography is fantastic the film is beautiful. Cast is all around outstanding I may have to let it settle a little more to be sure but I am leaning this could be Brad Pitt's finest work. Leo is his usual incredible and he really has a talent for comedy that is sometimes overlooked. Margot Robbie is perfectly cast as Sharon Tate an actress who's more famous for her death than her life and admittedly I'm not to familiar with her movies but the resemblance is there. An actress I'd never heard of Margaret Qualley is gorgeous and I loved her acting and character in a smaller role. I love time period movies and losing myself in them and I left the theater wishing I could of experienced Hollywood and California in 1969. It's getting an A+ grade from me I had a hoot watching it and my theatre seemed to be digging it as much as me especially the 3rd act it's GOLD.

This was excellent. I knew there'd be some history rewriting (especially after Inglourous Basterds), but that was so damn satisfying. Funny, sharp. Long yet didn't feel it (unlike Pulp Fiction...I always felt like The Gold Watch goes on for far too long).

Pulp Fiction being my all-time favorite movie I will disagree the gold watch scene but that and this are just so Tarantino I relish in it.

Not the scene that explains the gold watch, the segement titled that. Basically that long ass cab ride and the talky talky about pot bellies go on for too long, imo. Especially that cab ride.

I know what the cab conversation is about. It just goes on for far too long.

Isn't that a Tarantino hallmark a dialogue you wished was shorter?

Not to me. That's just the one section out of his resume I think couldve been trimmed shorter for pacing.

Could be the two actresses in those scenes not helping either.

I didn't feel it as hard as in PF.

Pulp is a top 5 all timer for me but the cab scene and motel scene keep it from being a perfect film. QT could have cut five minutes of fat off that thing and it would be a true 10/10. Just kind of a drag without too much substance in an otherwise constantly heavy hitting movie. I've really come to enjoy The Bonnie Situation, some of Tarantino's best dialogue and humor. Follows up all the craziness in The Gold Watch perfectly.
Not removing until John Elway is fired.

I wish Quentin would chill tf out with the foot stuff. Apart from that, no complaints. So satisfying, had a smile on my face pretty much the entire movie.

My Tarantino rankings, including True Romance and From Dusk Till Dawn because they're 100% his stories:

All-time Great:

1. Pulp Fiction (10/10)

Great:

2. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (9/10)
3. Jackie Brown (8.5/10)
4. Inglourious Basterds (8.5/10)
5. True Romance (8.25/10)
6. Kill Bill (8.25/10)
7. Reservoir Dogs (8/10)
8. Django Unchained (8/10)

Good:

9. The Hateful Eight (7.5/10)
10. From Dusk Till Dawn (7.25/10)
11. Kill Bill Vol. 2 (7/10)

Meh:

12. Death Proof (6/10)

I remember being really high on Kill Bill Vol 2 when it came out, but it has almost 0 repeatability compared to his other flicks.
