Yeah. When I watched Breaking Bad for the first time, my DVDs didn't have any English subtitles, but they had French so I brushed up. Got a little better at it again. There'd be words somebody in the show would say and I couldn't hear it, but I'd see the French subtitle and I'd generally recognize the word.

if the film or tv show is already in english, it would bug me to have subtitles. but that could be a good way to try to teach yourself another language, maybe.

as for recommends (though you didn't ask ), give 'he loves me, he loves me not'. a shot? and breathless, but that's a classic, so it might go without saying.
