Was doing some wordcount comparisons.

Harry Potter & The Sorceror's Stone was only 77k words. Goldfinger, the longest James Bond book, was 76k. I'll be approaching that soon. I keep getting the nagging feeling that my book's too short, but I guess not.

It needs to be enough words to tell the story. Is there some other logic to worrying about word count that I am missing?

I would think with the way books are released digitally and such now, It wouldn't make much difference. I would imagine people want all sorts of lengths, as they read for different reasons.

Probably not, but I'm just used to longer books. When I compile my project in Scrivener, it comes up so far to about 234 pages for a paperback, and that just feels almost half of what I'm used to, lol. That's why I'm hung up on it. It's not a big deal, just feels light.

I'm still chewing on that. I know it'll be an utter failure if I do, because no one reacts to my shit. BUT, I get a much higher percentage of sales if I do self publish, since authors get very little off of sales with actual publishers.

Also if I self publish, I get to be in charge of my own cover. There's a lot of shitty covers out there nowadays coming from the real deal publishing houses.

In general, it seems self publishing is really the best option. I just need real marketing. I don't even mind the idea of Amazon printing on demand for paperbacks (and I'll obviously have it available for kindle and stuff since that's common...I don't read'em, I still prefer the paperbacks)

Maybe its time to start? The problem is that no one is going to sell it with any passion for you. They have no vested interest and will let it die on the vine.

I've been watching youtube channels of authors that have done it. It looks like a pain in the ass, but you get more control. I may have to do some kickstarter or something to get the money for editing and marketing.

I would think releasing a sample chapter for free, some character artwork, a teaser of the plot, and what it is similar to would all be necessary.

And really, break out of your shell and become a personality. It will never work without the passion of hearing you describe it.

The only artwork planned would be the cover and some black & white inserts, but I could see how the inserts could spark interest if used like a movie trailer.
