(Reviewed by Snake-666) - Brilliant splatstick
horror-comedy! Despite retelling the events of 'The Evil Dead'
differently, ED2 is actually somewhat ingenious on how it starts out. Rather
than recap the previous events (which Raimi would have originally preferred
to do but could not due to copyright laws), ED2 changes into a new story.
This allows people who are yet to see the original to get right into the
story and not feel like they are missing something. For the people who have
seen the original the start of the sequel kicks in roughly 10 minutes into
the film from the same image that 'The Evil Dead' left off at.
So anyway, 'Evil Dead II' starts off with Ash (Bruce Campbell) and his
girlfriend taking a trip to a secluded cabin in the woods. There they find
the professors tape player which they switch on to hear him recite passages
from the Necronomicon aka The Book of the Dead. The words stir evil forces
in the woods surrounding them which quickly decide to hunt down Ash and his
girlfriend.
Meanwhile, the professors daughter, her boyfriend and a redneck couple make
their way to the cabin in the woods with newly found pages from the
Necronomicon.
'Evil Dead II' is a well made, gory and yet humourous addition to the Evil
Dead series. Not sticking to straight forward shock-horror like the original
it blends comedy elements as well making this a very enjoyable movie.
Bruce Campbell's Ash character is a little more manic, cocky and arrogant in
this film and he really starts to spout off the one-liners. In a way it's a
shame that a talented actor like Bruce Campbell is mainly remembered for his
roles in the Evil Dead films, but as in the original, he put in a truly
great performance.
Raimi's direction is once again superb, and while the film is made very much
like the original there is a certain professionalism to this sequel which
cannot go unnoticed.
I would recommend this film to any fan of the original, and to any horror
fan that is yet to see it. While 'Evil Dead II' may not be the scariest film
ever made it certainly is one of the most enjoyable horror films ever made
in my opinion and is a credit to the genre. 9/10 |
