(Reviewed by Foo) - Let me first start out by saying this
film bears no resemblence whatsoever to its "sequel", "CHUD
2: Bud the CHUD". While the latter is a zombie film, C.H.U.D. is
your basic monster movie, although better acted than most.
C.H.U.D. distinguishes itself from others in the same genre because of its
acting. The three male leads (Christopher Curry, Daniel Stern, and
John Heard) all went on to become accomplished actors in much larger films,
and they show that talent here. Unlike modern B-movies which are
filled with schtick and cheap jokes, CHUD takes itself very seriously.
In fact, it is very refreshing to see all adult leads in this genre that is
so heavily populated by teens.
The plot is nothing to write home about. As expected from a movie in
this era, the CHUD's were the result of nuclear/toxic waste. As more
and more people begin to disappear, the three leads start to do their own
investigating, and eventually encounter the sewer-dwelling CHUD's
You can't review a monster movie without talking about the monsters.
This is an area where the low budget really shows. The CHUDs are your
standard man in a monster suit. They are rather menacing looking,
until you get too good a look at their unnatural glowing eyes.
Overall, I rate this movie as being average. I really appreciate the
sincerity, but in the end, it was still just another low-budget monster
flick. (2.5 out of 5 stars) |
