Blood and Black Lace

(Reviewed by Preppy) - Probably Bava's best.  Beautiful fashion models are being sadistically killed from one house of fashion. But who is doing it--and why?

I'm no fan of director Mario Bava. He's a great director and his films are beautifully atmospheric--but the stories make no sense and the acting is usually dreadful. Well this one HAS a story--the acting is still lousy but you can't have everything. I saw the uncut Italian version and it's just beautiful. It's in bright, rich color and I love his use of different colored lights during sequences. The film is very scary too--the masked killer alone is spooky enough but there's also an eerie music score. The killings are (even by today's standards) pretty strong stuff--maybe too strong for some viewers. I also got the uncomfortable feeling that Bava LIKED showing these women get it--the murder of a blonde goes on and on and on and is truly sadistic. Because of that I can only give this an 8. Still it IS a good horror film.
