Blade was a character that made a debut in the marvel Comic
"The Tomb Of Dracula", a crazy, black, vampire hunting half bread
with a fro. He was, basically a loose cannon in the comics, and I think was
kind of dull. Then David Goyer turned him from lame to bad ass in the
screenplay for his own feature called "Blade"
"Blade" was a fast paced, well made movie that had action scenes
to make your mouth water and special effects to make you blow your
load right then and there. Wesley Snipes took the character, and was perfect
to play him. I can't imagine anyone else playing Blade, even Michael Jai
White couldn't get the attitude down enough to portray the character for
what he really was.
"Blade 2" was a wild roller coaster ride of a film, why? Gullimero
Del Toro, that's why. A great visual director who knows how to make a film
look bigger then it actually is. Although the story fell short compared to
the first film, the reapers and the action sequences made up for that. At
first, I was dissapointed that Norrington didn't return to direct, because
he too has a great visual style, and as much as I loved "Blade 2",
It felt like a different film, like it didn't fit with the first film. it
lost a sence of reality the first one had. The love story was under-writen
and barley there, but Blade falling head of heals for a vampire would make a
very interesting twist. The thing that surprised me the most, Skud. I liked
him from the moment I saw him, then he turned out to be a familer. That was
something that i didn't see coming and shocked me as much as John Amos's
character twist at the end of "Die Hard 2".
Now is the third installment, "Blade: Trinity". This is the
typical third film in the sence that the third always goes back to the
first, even though this isn't a straight trilogy, it's a trilogy like the
"Die Hard", "Indiana Jones" and "Robocop"
films because they don't move on a continuing storyline.
"Blade 3" has the vampires resurrecting Dracula himself in order
to finally evolve into day walkers and kill Blade for good. they get a jump
start by framing him for murders and he is caught by the police, where he is
rescued by nightstalkers Hannibal king and Abigal Whistler (Ryan Renolds
& Jessica Beil). They fill him in on the whole vampire shanannagins and
hope that he teams with them, hell they have a plan to wipe out every
existing vampire on the planet. What Blade doesn't count on is a few run ins
with legendary Dracula himself.
Snipes is more convincing then ever as Blade, and is gradually giving him
more personality since the first film and is now the whistler of the films
in a way. bitching at the younger folk, hannibal in particular for wearing a
nametag that reads "Fuck You".
"what is that your wearing, Fuck you? are you trying to be funny?"
He says to Hannibal.
"First off, that's rude..." Hannibal replies. Which leads me to my
next discussion, how I like and disliked that character. Ryan renolds is a
funny man. "Van Wilder" was a riot and he is hilarious as hell in
this movie. the character worked and had as much screen time as Blade. my
problem is that this hannibal is different then the comic hannibal king. the
comic version is a clean cut and very serious dectective who was bitten
by deacon frost and has decided to help out the humans rather then his own
kind. through his police work he fights vampires and protects the innocent.
The Hannibal of the movies is a smart ass former vampire, as in he was cured
by the blind lady.
Although David Goyer changed a lot of the characters from the Tomb of
Dracula comic. Deacon frost was an old man in the comics, in fact, Kris
kristopherson as whistler resembles the comics Deacon a lot. Even dracula
himself is no were near the Dracula of the comic, which is a shame, because
the comic version was much cooler looking.
Abigal Whistler was under-writen and a very quiet character in the movie,
you really don't get to know her. But Beil is hot and I wanna make babies
with her...any-hoo, moving on...
The special effects were good and lot less cartoonish then Blade 2. The
story was decent and not at all lame, the score was pretty damn good and the
action was incredible for a person who is makiing his directing debut. this
movie looked very professional.
Over all, the film worked, everything worked for it and it was very
entertaining, sure, as a comic fan, i did wish for it to be more true to the
comic, especially with Dracula as the villian, but hell, you can't always
get what you want, Goyer has a plan and i trust him. he turned a lame
character into a jaw dropping film series, and that's gotta count towards
something right? |
